Medicare Advantage plans cover Medicare A, B and Part D drug benefits all in one low or no cost package (called Medicare Part C). These plans are offered by private insurance companies and are subsidized by the federal government. Medicare Advantage plans add extra benefits not covered by Medicare such as coverage for routine dental, eyeglasses, hearing aids, a gym membership and over the counter items.

Medicare Advantage Plan

Medicare or Medicaid?

You can choose to supplement your Medicare coverage. If you have Medicare and are enrolled in your state's Medicaid program, you may qualify for additional benefits.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is another way to get your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called “Part C” or “MA Plans,” are offered by Medicare-approved private companies that must follow rules set by Medicare. Most Medicare Advantage Plans include drug coverage (Part D). In many cases, you’ll need to use health care providers who participate in the plan’s network and service area for the lowest costs. These plans set a limit on what you’ll have to pay out-of-pocket each year for covered services, to help protect you from unexpected costs. Some plans offer out-of-network coverage, but sometimes at a higher cost. Remember, you must use the card from your Medicare Advantage Plan to get your Medicare-covered services. Keep your red, white, and blue Medicare card in a safe place because you’ll need it if you ever switch back to Original Medicare. If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you’ll still have Medicare but you’ll get most of your Part A and Part B coverage from your Medicare Advantage Plan, not Original Medicare.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans help to pay the 20% that Medicare doesn’t.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Original Medicare pays for much, but not all, of the cost for covered health care services and supplies. Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policies sold by private companies, can help pay some of the remaining health care costs for covered services and supplies, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles. Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like medical care when you travel outside the U.S. Generally, Medigap doesn’t cover long-term care (like care in a nursing home), vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

Under 65 Health Insurance: If you are under 65, there are a number of affordable health insurance options available to you.

Under 65 Health Insurance

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010 (also known as Obamacare…a name President Obama liked and approved of) provides insurance coverage options without taking into consideration pre-existing health conditions. These plans are available to people who don’t have insurance coverage through an employer plan or state Medicaid benefits. Insurance subsidies from the federal government and cost share reduction to reduce out-of-pocket costs are important features of these plans that provide relief from the high cost of individual and family health insurance. There are also a number of short-term health plan options available if you need temporary coverage between jobs.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan: Upon becoming eligible for Medicare by turning 65 or due to a disability, most people will need prescription drug coverage. You choose this coverage from a private insurance company by selecting a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan as a stand-alone plan or in combination with medical benefits through a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.

Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan

Medicare drug coverage helps pay for prescription drugs you need. Even if you don’t take prescription drugs now, you should consider getting Medicare drug coverage. Medicare drug coverage is optional and is offered to everyone with Medicare. If you decide not to get it when you’re first eligible, and you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage (like drug coverage from an employer or union) or get Extra Help, you’ll likely pay a late enrollment penalty if you join a plan later. Generally, you’ll pay this penalty for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage. To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a Medicare-approved plan that offers drug coverage. Each plan can vary in cost and specific drugs covered.

Dental Insurance: The link between dental health and one’s overall health is becoming more and more apparent. The good news is that there are many excellent dental options from which to choose.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is an important component of your overall insurance needs. You will be more likely to keep current on your routine dental care if you have dental insurance in place. Dental insurance can be purchased as a stand-alone policy or in connection with under 65 individual health insurance or with Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans.

Indemnity Plans: These exist to help offset out of pocket costs like deductibles, co-pays and coinsurance.

Indemnity Plans

Common indemnity plans are insurance products like Accident, Critical Illness (heart, stroke and cancer) and Hospital Recovery policies. You pay a monthly premium to the insurance company so that if you having a qualifying accident or illness, the insurance policy pays you directly so that you will have the money to pay the resulting doctor and hospital bills.
